Black Friday: To shop or not to shop

Join Remake & the sustainable fashion movement to #boycottblackfriday

Hello biggest shopping day of the year! Believe it or not, as much as I love shopping, I am not at all in favor of Black Friday. Well, of course, unless you choose to shop secondhand. If you followed or took part in this month’s #NothingNewNovember challenge, you might have noticed that the week 4 challenge was to shop secondhand.

Now hang on- I understand that shopping secondhand might not be for everyone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still shop sustainably and curate a conscious wardrobe, even if you only want to shop brand new. I have my ways! Keep reading!

Black Friday may be a long-held American tradition, but more importantly than ever it is another opportunity to vote with your wallet. Every purchase you make (or not) is a vote to create the world you want to live in.

Over the last four years since I started learning about sustainable fashion, I feel the holiday shopping insanity has only escalated. My email is incessantly flooded with Black Friday/ Cyber Monday, etc. deals to persuade us to buy, buy, buy.

I love a good deal just as much as anyone, but when is enough enough? I'm choosing to take a stand against the excessive advertising this year by sharing what I feel is a more conscious way to do holiday shopping. Stay close to my Instagram where I share stylish & fun gifting alternatives, discount codes, and shopping for a cause- shopping that actually does more good than harm. I'm sold. You?

Remake, as organization I work closely with as an Advisory Board Member and a Global Ambassador, is offering a lot of support through their social media and their website to become a more conscious consumer and use fashion for good. And with Black Friday here, they are especially ramping up their truth telling about what’s really going on in the fashion industry.

I hope you will join me in supporting Remake's work to change the industry for good. Check out their writeup {here} on why Cyber Monday is an even bigger problem that Black Friday. Please share this on your social channels and with your friends. To educate ourselves is our right to exercise. Remake is making it super easy to do so.

In support of Remake’s mission,

According to Remake, "The National Retail Federation estimates that consumer spending will be up 4% this year, with 165 million people expected to shop over the Thanksgiving weekend. Cyber Monday will also set a new record this year with a predicted $9.4 billion being spent on the consumer holiday alone.”

.

“Of course, the best option is always to buy locally, and if you can, buy used. By reducing the demand for goods, production and shipping of goods will be forced to slow down.”

The fashion industry is still one of the polluting industries in the world. I know, I know, I may be sounding like a broken record at this point, but I repeat myself because it really is that important that we all wake up to what is really happening. Just in the fact that we all get up and wear clothes- we are all just as much a part of the problem as we are the solution. That is great news!!

Since we all wear clothes, we are all clothing decision-makers, and therefor can be clothing change-makers. That is why I am choosing to focus on secondhand clothing, especially from locally-owned independent retailers, and responsible gifting options throughout this entire holiday season. I hope you will consider this as a potential shopping solution to help you become a more conscious consumer and do more good than harm with your gifting choices.

I swear by shopping with intention- simply being conscious of what you’re buying- why, where, from whom. In the coming weeks I’ll be sharing additional sustainable shopping strategies that you can employ no matter where you’re shopping- brand new or used- for the holiday season and beyond. We can make a positive impact on the state of our environment just in the little choices we each make.

Shop till you drop- or not. Secondhand John Fluevog clogs- perfect condition.

I hope this leaves you feeling empowered and inspired to check out your local shops and make choices to shop more consciously. Choose clothing you love and that feel good to you! Use your style to express yourself freely and vote with your wallet.

Please share this with anyone you think might be interested or could use a little push in a more conscious shopping direction.

Happy Shopping! Or not...
